Milwaukee (WSAU)- Last night’s game against the Washington Nationals will be an unforgettable one. Especially for Brewers’ left fielder, Mark Canha. He bashed a grand slam late in the 8th, giving Milwaukee the lead they needed.
Canha received a first-pitch grand slam off of Washington National Kyle Finnegan to earn the Milwaukee Brewers the win over the Washington Nationals 9-5, inching them to an NL Central Title.
Milwaukee came back after a wrenching 4-run lead, winning the 13th time out of their last 15 home games. They lead NL Central by 6 1/2 games over the Chicago Cubs who lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks after 13 innings last night.
Washington had the game tied at the top of the 8th, after trailing 5-1 in the 6th. But Milwaukee had other plans and responded to Finnegan in an aggressive fashion. Tyrone Taylor started the 8th inning, with a 1-out double, while Sal Frelick followed with an infield single. Carlos Santana fell behind 1-2 in the count until a walk that loaded the bases.
This set everything into place for Mark Canha, as he stepped foot on the plate cracking a 411-foot drive into the left-field stands- earning the grand slam. Canha is batting .313 with a .397 on-base percentage, 5 homers, and 26 RBI in 38 games since the Brewers picked him up from the Mets at the trade deadline. This was Canha’s 2nd career grand slam.
Tyrone Taylor also homered for Milwaukee. Frelick and Canha each went 3 for 56.
Burnes had his 1st pitching appearance since his last Sunday. He allowed 3 runs, 3 hits and 3 walks in the 6th.
Milwaukee hopes for 3-game sweep today when the teams face off in the series finale.
