WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The Wausau School District may not have enough science lab space to consolidatie its two high schools in 2025.
During the Monday school board meeting staff and district leader expressed their concern about the science curriculum during and after the restructur transition. Staff have also expressed how there is not enough space.
“We are also running kind of mock schedules if you will and we anticipate the need for four more science labs actually it would be an all new science wing,” said Wausau District Superintendent, Keith Hilts.
The school district’s plan would be to send sophomores, juniors, and seniors to Wausau West. Grades eight and nine would attend school at the current Wausau East building.
But this leaves the district members with questions if the merger will be done on time. “For science equipment, they have gas outlets and sinks and sometimes fume hoods so the 4 labs plus two storage spaces for the teachers is where estimating that 6.6 million,” said Hilts.
This also leaves board members concerned with the budget and if these new labs will increase consolidation costs. “Science rooms and additional science labs are just one piece of a larger issue. In order for the reconstruction to be successful in my opinion we need to have a complete facility functional analysis assessment done,” said Wausau District Board member, Pat McKee.
District leaders plan to revisit the issue along with providing new information in the next school board meeting on October 9th, 2023.
