MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) A pair of lawmakers want to restrict wake surfing on Wisconsin lakes.
At issue are newer, larger boats designed to create more wake and higher waves for sport.
State Senator Mary Felzkowski and State Representative Rob Sweringen want to prohibit the sport on small lakes and keep the boats and surfers more than 200 feet from shore.
Conservation and lake association groups indicate that’s not enough to keep the high wakes from damaging docks and habitats. According to the Water Sports Industry Association, the boats are safe enough to run in 10 feet of water, and fears of damage are overblown.
