TOWN OF CRESENT, WI (WSAU)– The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are investigating a critical incident that occurred on Saturday evening in the Town of Cresent.
Around 8:30 P.M. Saturday, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office received two hang-up calls to 911, which prompted a welfare check at the residence located in the 1600 Block of River Street. Three Oneida County Sheriff’s deputies along with two Rhinelander police officers responded, showing up at the residence.
When law enforcement arrived at the dwelling, they detected that there were two subjects inside. When law enforcement entered the premises, they were met with gunfire. One deputy returned fire as they retreated, backing away from the dwelling and began to create a perimeter. The shooter inside continued firing shots at the officers from the second level of the home.
Tactical members from various counties including, Vilas, Oneida, Marathon, and Lincoln, responded to the residence. Attempts of verbal commands and non-lethal tactics were deployed. The second subject emerged from the home and was evaluated by emergency medical services on the scene.
When the tactical team entered the home, they located the other subject who was deceased.
The involved officers did not endure any injuries during the incident. The officers from the Rhinelander Police Department and deputies from Oneida have been placed on administrative duty per department policy. The involved officers from Rhinelander were wearing body cameras , and both the Rhinelander and Oneida Police Departments were equipped with squad cameras.
The DCI is leading the investigation, and is assited by the DCI Crime Response Specialists as well as members of the DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit. All law enforcement cooperating with the DCI during this investigation. As the DCI continues to review evidence from the case, they will turn the investigative reports to the Oneida County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
