GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Packers defensive coordinator role is up for grabs after firing Joe Barry earlier this week, and the team is reportedly planning to meet with former Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley on Friday about the position.
Dianna Russini and Matt Schneidman of The Athletic were the first to report the interview, which may come as a surprise to many Packers fans considering the Chargers ranked 26th in DVOA (Defensive-Adjusted Value Average) in 2023.
The 41-year-old Staley went 24-24 over three seasons as the Chargers head coach but saw success in 2020 when he was the defensive coordinator for the LA Rams, who ranked 3rd in DVOA that season as well as being the top scoring defense and allowing the fewest yards per game in the league.
The Packers are expected to host other candidates for interviews in the coming days which some insiders report may include Dallas Cowboys Defensive Backs Coach Al Harris and former NY Giants Defensive Coordinator Wink Martindale.
