GANGWON, KOREA (WSAU) — The USA Mixed Doubles Curling team has taken bronze in the Youth Olympic Games held in Korea.
The squad made up of Wausau’s Ella Wendling and Eau Claire’s Benji Paral defeated a team from Sweden 7-4 on Wednesday to reach the podium. According to a release from the Wausau Curling Club, the Swedes held a 4-3 advantage going to the final end. The Americans scored once to force an extra end, then added three more stones in the extra frame to secure the win.
It was the closest draw of the tournament for the team. They went undefeated in group play before defeating a team from the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. They fell to Denmark in the semifinals before bouncing back in the bronze medal draw.
Wendling and Paral were coached by Wausau West curling coach Jim Wendling.
