STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The makeup of Division Street in Stevens Point is once again at the forefront.
Mayor Mike Wiza says the city seems to have settled on a three-lane layout for much of the road, but some details remain fluid.
“It has gone to what we call the 30% design. Meaning 30% of the work is done,” said Wiza. “That usually starts with the layout of the road. Then as you get more detailed you work out the driveways and the crosswalks, things like that.”
Last week the city conducted several listening sessions and one-on-one meetings with stakeholders along the road. Wiza says all of that feedback is being taken into account, but he knows there is no way to make everyone completely happy. “It’s not that they don’t hear you, it’s not that they don’t take you seriously. The council is elected to represent the constituents they serve.
“We’ve had tons of public meetings on this. The [city] council may disagree with your opinion,” added Wiza.
Wiza himself questions one aspect that the designers have put forward. That’s a roundabout at the intersection of Division and 4th. “I’m not a fan. We have 600 people per day crossing that road. Roundabouts are designed to keep traffic flowing. I’m still not convinced but AECOM has submitted their final report with all the research they’ve done and they still recommending a roundabout.”
Discussion regarding the project, which Wiza has previously described as a ‘once in a generation’ investment, is expected to continue throughout 2024.
