EAU CLAIRE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) -There’s no snow on the ground, but that didn’t stop the Snowshoe National Championships from taking place in Eau Claire. The race went on with a few adjustments.
“This has been a very different year for winter in Wisconsin,” said Derek Parr, trails director with CORBA (Community for Outdoor Recreation and Adventure).
The U.S. Snowshoe National Championships ran through Lowes Creek County Park over the weekend, but with the lack of snow the race was turned into a trail run instead. “We were able to adjust our plans since we had all the prep work, and the Nationals need to happen, so we were able to switch from snowshoeing to a trail run,” Parr said.
It was announced in October that Eau Claire would host the national event, and has taken months of planning from CORBA, Visit Eau Claire, and the U.S. Snowshoe Association.
“At this time we should be at least six feet under snow,” Lucas Connolly, sports relationship manager with Visit Eau Claire said. “We are very grateful that we are able to have the event go on regardless of the snow, and we’ve been hearing a lot of good feedback from all the racers and everyone involved that they’re happy that we put this on.”
