STATE COLLEGE, PA and MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Kyle McClellan recorded 27 saves in a 6-0 win for the Badger men’s hockey team on Friday.
Mathieu De St Phalle and Lucius Cruz each recorded two goals in the win with Cruz adding an assist. William Whitelaw and Carson Bantle each found the back of the net as well.
Wisconsin’s scoring was evenly distributed, with two goals in each period. Both of Cruz’s tallies came on the power play.
The Badgers improve to 23-8-2 on the season and 14-6-1 in B1G play, just one point behind first-place Michigan State in the standings. They’ll play Penn State again this evening looking to sweep the four-game season series against the Nittany Lions.
In Madison, the Badger women fell to Ohio State 3-1. Maddi Wheeler scored the lone goal for Wisconsin to give them an early 1-0 lead. But the Buckeyes scored twice in the second to take the lead.
Ohio State also scored on an empty net, power play goal with under a minute to go in the 3rd period.
The win stretches Ohio State’s lead in the WCHA standings to 11 points over Wisconsin (76 points to 65). The Buckeyes have lost just one conference game all year, a 2-1 setback against St. Cloud State on December 2nd.
OSU will go for the season sweep of the Badgers this afternoon.
Pairings for the best-of-three WCHA Tournament quarterfinals series will be set after today’s games. Wisconsin will host either St. Thomas (MN) or Bemidji State (MN) next weekend.
