WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – 51-year-old Amanda Chapin, a former resident of Monroe City in Green County Wisconsin, has entered a “No Contest” plea. This comes after allegations of poisoning her former husband-to-be, 70-year-old Gary Chapin. The alleged poison was put in his morning coffee at least 3 times.
In March of 2022, Gary and Amanda were wed and problems arose shortly after their union. Court documents show Amanda had allegedly forged the signature of one of her husband’s children on a document for power of attorney. She demanded that if her husband died, she should get the home.
Five months into their marriage, Gary’s son submitted a criminal complaint stating she had poisoned her husband after a quitclaim deed on the house was authorized. The criminal complaint stated Amanda had poisoned her husband once less than 3 weeks after authorization of the quitclaim deed.
Gary recalls drinking his coffee on August 21, 2022, and the next thing he knew, he was waking up in the hospital after falling into a coma that had lasted 4 days.
Gary’s son told officials his father was a veterinarian and kept barbiturates for the euthanizing animals in the home. He also stated he believed Amanda was using his father as a “sugar daddy.”
Blood work showed that Gary had barbiturates in his system at the time of coma. Authorities presume Amanda stole the animal euthanasia drugs and spiked her husband’s coffee at least 3 times between July and August 2022.
In March, Amanda pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. During Friday’s hearing, she pled no contest and was found guilty of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
Online records show Gary has filed for divorce, and Gary’s son filed a restraining order against Amanda, on his father’s behalf.
Amanda Chapin is scheduled to be sentenced on July 25th.
