WESTON, WI (WSAU) — Two new water wells are online in Weston, but that won’t be the end of their water infrastructure upgrades.
Public Works Director Michael Wodalski says the new wells will allow them to shift attention to cleaning up other issues without interrupting service. “We won’t have to worry about being low on water,” said Wodalski. “We can do well rehabs, clean up secondary contaminants like iron and manganese that cause aesthetic issues in some of our wells.”
They are also scheduled to install a granular activated carbon system which will allow them to bring an additional well back into service and remove the temporary filtration system that’s been hooked up to another well. Wodalksi says both were delivering water with about 50-60 parts per trillion of PFAS, but once everything is run through the GAC residents can expect a quality product from their taps. “At that point, you are pretty much taking anything and everything out of the water. It is as close to pure H2O as you are going to get.”
Wodalski adds that the village’s water treatment plant was already built to handle the system, meaning at this time there is no looming rate increase for residents. “It was actually set up [for this] when it was built in the 80s. The tanks weren’t installed, but everything is plumed. Our cost to install that is pretty low.
The majority of the financing is coming through a safe drinking water loan. The village has also submitted claims into the various class-action lawsuits against PFAS manufacturing companies. Meaning if the village gets a favorable outcome there could be little to no impact for ratepayers.
