STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau-area man accused of participating in the deadly beating of a Stevens Point man will go on trial starting Monday.
Arlin Sangster is scheduled for a one-week trial beginning at 8:30 AM tomorrow for one count of reckless homicide against an elderly person and theft of movable property. Both sides held a final motion hearing on Friday to finalize evidence and witness procedures.
The 20-year-old is accused of being part of a group that beat Donald J Mitchell in a downtown Stevens Point parking lot. Witnesses say they were going through Mitchell’s pickup, and when the 61-year-old confronted the group they began to beat him. Doctors say he exhibited multiple fractured ribs and nearly every bone in his face was broken.
Mitchell had armed himself with a pair of pliers, which was found next to his body before he was rushed to a local hospital. He died from his injuries the next day.
The maximum penalty for reckless homicide is 40 years in prison. Sangster could get an extra six years due to Mitchell’s age.
