WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Newman Catholic Classical School: Holy Name is now open.
This is the first time in years the Wausau area has had a classical school.
While it is a Catholic school as well, a major focus is going back to the basics.
Essentially, that is what being classical means. There is no technology in the classrooms other than the occasional CD player. That is by design.
It is to help kids focus more on reading, writing and arithmetic.
Memorization and recall are emphasized with what students are reading as well.
“I still remember poems that I learned in 4th grade and it’s a joy to be able to share that with other people still to this day, so it helps the brain, but it’s also for the sake of knowledge. For the sake of loving and learning these different texts,” said Anna McCarty who teaches 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.
“The plan right now is to, well, obviously grow and to make sure we’re growing at a pace that’s comfortable and that we can make sure we’re focusing on the foundation that we want to lay here,” said Headmaster Jimmy Lynch.
Teaching the children to be respectful and of good character is another part of what they learn right when they start.
Many of the children did not come from classical schools so they are still adjusting, but Lynch said they are getting more and more acclimated day by day.
