CINCINNATI, OH (WSAU) — DL Hall and Joe Ross teamed up to pitch a shutout as the Brewers offense exploded in a 14-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Hall went seven innings and allowed just four hits with five strikeouts. Ross took over for the final two innings and allowed one hit while striking out three.
Sal Frelick gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead in the 4th with an RBI infield single. Garrett Mitchell and Rhys Hoskins homered in the 6th and 7th, respectively, building the lead to 4-0.
Things got weird in the 9th as Milwaukee would score ten runs starting with a single from Hoskins to bring home Blake Perkins. Willy Adames would follow that with a three-run homer. William Contreras capped off the inning with a two-run shot.
Frelick, Brice Turang, and Perkins recorded run-scoring doubles in the 9th. Frelick finished the game with three hits and two RBI.
Contreras, Hoskins, Mitchell, and Andruw Monasterio each finished with two hits on the night.
The win followed a 5-4 ten-inning victory in a makeup of an April 11th rainout. Milwaukee improves to 79-56 with the sweep and moves them into a tie with the Philadelphia Phillies for second in the National League Postseason standings.
Both Philadelphia and Milwaukee are two games behind the LA Dodgers for the top seed. Of course, the top two seeds earn byes into the Divisional round, while the third seed plays in the best-of-three Wild Card round.
Game three of the weekend series is tonight with pregame coverage starting at 5:40 on WSAU.
