RINGLE, WI (WSAU) — D.C. Everest’s Riverside Elementary School has been named an Apple Distinguished School, recognizing its use of technology in the classroom.
Director of Technology Sarah Tompson says it started a few years ago when teachers started implementing Apple tablets and other technology into their curriculum, often as a capstone project to a particular unit or lesson. “A lot of [what you saw] were at the end of a unit. Where [teachers say] ‘show us you’ve learned in your reading class or writing class.’ We are still using ciriculums, but it’s kind of the end product. It’s another way for kids to show that they are learning.”
Those projects were showcased in a video during an all-school assembly on Monday where leaders also unrolled the Distinguished School banner that will hang for the next three years.
Thompsons says the honor gives Riverside a dedicated Apple support representative to help them with professional development. They will also attend a conference in November to share ideas with other distinguished schools, and host other schools for brainstorming sessions as well, including other schools in the DCE system.
Riverside Elementary is one of 1,000 schools worldwide with the distinction and the only elementary school in Wisconsin. The recognition lasts through 2027.
