WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Police Department is applauding the efforts of a Good Samaritan who found $3,000 in cash and gift envelopes on the sidewalk along 50th Avenue early Wednesday morning.
In a Facebook post, officers said the envelope also contained a receipt for the transaction, which allowed them to identify the money’s rightful owner. “We contacted the bank, showed them the slips that we had, and they were able to confirm that the person banked with them and they would be able to get the money back to them,” said Lieutenant Luis Lopes.
“It would have been very easy for nobody to know who would have grabbed it, and the fact that he was willing to turn it in and get it to the rightful person is awesome,” he added.
Police received the call from the Good Samaritan at around 4:30 AM. According to the receipt, the cash had been withdrawn the previous afternoon. It’s unclear how long the money had been on the sidewalk, unguarded.
Lopes said the Good Samaritan, who was not identified, didn’t go away from the situation empty-handed. They did receive a $25 gift card to Menards. “We have some gift cards that we can periodically hand out to people, [so we were more than happy] to give that out for their integrity.”
He added that things like missing purses or wallets are often turned into police, but an envelope of cash with little to no identifying information is uncommon.
