WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau man accused of recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct for a viral boat crash last August appears to have reached a plea deal for a count of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct.
Joel Kleiber was in a Marathon County courtroom this week where his defense announced that they’ve reached an agreement with prosecutors. A judge then scheduled a plea hearing for May 11th.
The 46-year-old was seen on video driving his boat on Lake Wausau at a high speed, then ramming the vessel into a boat ramp at the D.C. Everest Park. The incident was reported to police, who were able to identify Kleiber through photos and video from witnesses at the scene.
Kleiber had previously entered a not guilty plea to the charges.
He also faces charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property in the case, those have not been settled but according to his attorney, the two sides are working on an agreement as well. Those charges will have a status conference on May 11th along with the plea hearing.
Kleiber remains free on bond.
