MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin DNR is reminding wolf hunters and trappers that the current season will close on Wednesday.
Wolf hunting and trapping in zones 2, 5, and 6 closed at 10 AM. The remaining zones (1, 3, and 4) will close by 3 PM.
Hunting or trapping wolves outside of their season comes with a fine of over $300.
The most recent wolf hunt came about after a judge blocked an attempt by the DNR to delay the season until this fall. A lottery for tags was held late last week, with the season opener on Monday.
Hunters then quickly harvested over half of the 119 wolf quota for the season. As of Wednesday morning, reports indicated that hunters have surpassed that number with hours remaining in the season.
DNR officials are still working on the details of the fall season, and what the state’s long-range wolf management plan will look like.
