MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Barry Alvarez, long-time University of Wisconsin athletic director and former football coach, is retiring.
“It has been an honor to be a part of Wisconsin Athletics and I take great pride in all we have accomplished over the last three decades,” Alvarez said in a written statement. “From championships, to improvements on campus, to impacting thousands of student-athletes, it’s been a great ride.”
A tweet from the UW athletic department said: “After 32 years of leadership and excellence, Barry Alvarez is announcing his retirement,” the Badgers announced on Twitter. “Thanks for everything, Coach!”
Alvarez spent 32 years in the Wisconsin athletic department. As football coach he compiled a 119-74-4 record with the Badgers, including three Big Ten titles and three Rose Bowl victories. He served as football coach and athletic director for two seasons before relinquishing his football duties. Alvarez was AD for 18 seasons.
His last day at UW will be June 30, 2021. A replacement hasn’t been named.
