J.D. Martinez hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Boston Red Sox to an 8-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in Dunedin, Fla.
It was the 33-year-old Martinez’s 250th career homer and 12th this season. Bobby Dalbec hit a three-run homer for Boston, and Alex Verdugo had an RBI groundout in the ninth off Rafael Dolis (1-1) before Martinez’s long ball.
Phillips Valdez (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Matt Barnes struck out three in the ninth for his 10th save.
Bo Bichette had three hits for Toronto. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-5 with two runs, and Randal Grichuk had two hits and two RBIs.
Giants 19, Reds 4
Steven Duggar’s grand slam highlighted a nine-run third inning, and Brandon Crawford, Darin Ruf and Evan Longoria also homered as San Francisco completed a four-game road sweep of Cincinnati.
Crawford, Ruf and Longoria combined for 10 hits and 11 RBIs.
Ruf clubbed a two-run homer in the third for one of his four hits, while Crawford (three hits) delivered a three-run shot in the fifth and had six RBIs. The Giants produced their highest-scoring contest since a 23-5 win at Colorado on Sept. 1, 2020.
Rays 10, Orioles 1
Randy Arozarena homered and drove in four runs for the second straight game to help visiting Tampa Bay beat Baltimore for its seventh straight win.
The victory completed a three-game sweep for Tampa Bay, which scored 32 runs in the series, and Arozarena played a big role. He hit two homers and drove in four runs in Wednesday’s come-from-behind 9-7 victory, and on Thursday, he went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs.
His three-run homer was the key hit in a four-run second inning against Baltimore starter Dean Kremer (0-4) and broke the game open. Arozarena finished with the homer plus three more singles as Tampa Bay banged out 18 hits and stranded 16.
Angels 7, Twins 1 (Game 1)
Phil Gosselin homered and drove in four runs to lead Los Angeles over Minnesota in the opener of a doubleheader at Anaheim, Calif.
Taylor Ward added a two-run blast for the Angels, who won for only the third time in their past nine games.
Angels right-hander Alex Cobb (2-2) came off the injured list and allowed one run on four hits over five innings in his first start since May 4.
Twins 6, Angels 3 (Game 2)
Miguel Sano hit his second career grand slam and visiting Minnesota gained a split of the doubleheader against Los Angeles.
Rookie Trevor Larnach hit his first homer, Luis Arraez had two hits and Josh Donaldson drew three walks for the Twins, who won for the third time in their last 12 games.
Jose Rojas belted a leadoff homer in the second for the Angels.
Cubs 5, Nationals 2
Ian Happ went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs as Chicago beat visiting Washington.
Joc Pederson and Nick Martini each drove in one run for the Cubs, who have won four of their past five games.
Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber hit solo home runs for Washington. Josh Harrison doubled for the only other extra-base hit for the Nationals, who wrapped up a seven-game trip with a 3-4 record.
Yankees 2, Rangers 0
Gio Urshela and Aaron Judge produced pinch-hit RBI singles in the seventh inning as New York ended a 10-game road trip with a victory at Arlington, Texas.
The Yankees’ Domingo German (4-2) allowed six hits in seven sharp innings to win his fourth straight decision. The right-hander struck out five, walked none and threw 87 pitches.
Dane Dunning allowed four hits in six scoreless innings for the Rangers. He struck out six, walked one and threw 79 pitches.
Astros 8, Athletics 4
Martin Maldonado contributed an RBI double and a two-run home run in consecutive innings to propel Houston into first place in the American League West with a victory at Oakland.
Alex Bregman had three hits and drove in two runs while Jose Altuve scored three times for the Astros, who lost the series opener but bounced back for a pair of wins.
Mark Canha, Tony Kemp and Seth Brown hit solo homers for the A’s, who had been in first place since April 20.
Marlins 6, Phillies 0
Sandy Alcantara tossed six shutout innings while Garrett Cooper homered, tripled and drove in three runs to lift Miami past host Philadelphia.
Alcantara (2-3) allowed two hits, struck out nine and walked three. Miguel Rojas added two hits, including a home run, while Corey Dickerson doubled, walked twice and scored three runs for the Marlins, who won their second in a row.
Phillies starter Vince Velasquez was a late scratch just before the game with a numb index finger on his right hand. David Hale (0-2) became the emergency starter and allowed two hits and one run in three innings.
Pirates 6, Braves 4 (10 innings)
Kevin Newman singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to help visiting Pittsburgh earn a win over Atlanta.
Newman hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Jacob Webb (1-2) to drive in Ben Gamel, who began the inning as the runner at second base. The Pirates added another run on Gregory Polanco’s sacrifice fly.
Braves starter Drew Smyly posted his third straight quality start, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
