WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau School District is seeing a bump in summer school enrollment after it was announced that face coverings would be optional for the session.
According to Wausau Pilot and Review Superintendent Keith Hilts says at least 170 students signed up for summer classes after they announced the policy would shift from mandatory face coverings to optional.
While those numbers can fluctuate daily, Hilts told the publication that a majority of the increase came after the May 10th decision by the board to make face coverings optional for the summer session but leaving the requirement in place for the final few weeks of the school year.

Face coverings remain optional for all outdoor events.
School leaders have been expecting a bump in summer school enrollment as many students struggled with online learning setups throughout the year. Failing grades spiked in the first quarter of the last year when virtual learning was the only option for Wausau students. Numbers did improve slightly going into the end of the first semester when students returned to in-person learning a few days a week.

Hilts previously told WSAU news that the district would be offering expanded summer school programs to allow students to play catch up while still allowing students to participate in normal summer activities.
