MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is reportedly leaning towards a veto for a bill that would end the extra $300 per week in federal unemployment benefits that were put in place at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Republican-controlled legislature passed the bill last week, with many in the GOP saying it is keeping people from actively looking for work; though Evers says he doesn’t see where cutting the bonus would fill “20 jobs or 20,000 jobs.”
The extra boost is scheduled to end on September 9th, but nearly half of all states have passed similar legislation that ends the payments early.
Evers says he may be open to gradually drawing down the benefit, which comes on top of the $370 weekly benefit already paid out by the state to those that are unemployed.
The Governor made his comments on WISN’s UpFront program Sunday morning.
