With the increasing prevalence of herbicide-resistant weeds across the state, it’s important to stop the accidental spread of weed seeds from field to field through contaminated equipment. With fall quickly approaching, now is the time to be gearing up to stop the spread of weed seeds through harvesting.
On August 18th at Rio Creek Feed Mill (715 Frontier Road, Luxemburg, WI), there will be a hands-on Combine Cleaning Clinic. This free event will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a light lunch.
Dr. Rodrigo Werle, Extension Cropping Systems Weed Specialist, and Nick Arneson, UW-Madison Outreach Specialist, will talk about weed seed production, viability, and the spread of common weeds. They’ll also present the results of their recent waterhemp and giant ragweed studies. Kewaunee County Extension Ag Agent, Aerica Bjurstrom will present on dairy forage considerations. Dan Smith, UW-Madison Nutrient and Pest Management Outreach Specialist, will then walk participants through the steps to properly clean a combine to limit the spread of weed seeds.
The event’s open to everyone and those attending are encouraged to RSVP with Kewaunee County Extension at (920)388-7141.
