WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The 2021-’22 academic year for public school students in Wausau, and many other districts are nearing their opening days as well if they haven’t already done so.
In Wausau, students are not being required to wear face coverings in the classroom, but those riding the bus to and from school will be required to wear them. Officials say that’s due to requirements from the Transportation Safety Administration, which extended its face-covering requirement on all forms of public transportation through mid-January 2022.
The district will also offer free COVID-19 testing for any student showing symptoms of the disease with permission from the student’s parent or guardian. District officials add that the janitorial staff will conduct thorough cleaning daily, especially in the event of a positive case in one of the buildings.
The district has also upgraded its air filtration and HVAC system to better protect against the spread of germs and viruses.
Just two local districts are requiring face coverings for all students in classroom settings to start the year- Stevens Point and Marshfield. Wisconsin Rapids is requiring masks for those in grades 4K through 8th.
Merrill, Mosinee, D.C. Everest, and Rhinelander are all joining Wausau in making masks optional for the new year. Though some of those districts have made it clear they will be continually evaluating the situation surrounding COVID-19, and plans could change accordingly.
