MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — A Marshfield woman was nearly scammed out of some of her hard-earned money but was able to freeze her accounts just in time.
In a police report shared with the media on Friday, officers say the woman had her iPad hacked, with the hackers later demanding a $3,000 fee to “clean” the device.
She sent them a picture of a hand-written check before realizing she was being scammed. The woman was able to call her bank and have her accounts frozen before the scammers were able to deposit the check.
In addition to freezing her bank accounts, she also had her debit and credit cards turned off and is taking steps to protect her social security number.
Officers say she hasn’t lost any money but the full extent of the scam may not be known for several days as the hackers may have obtained other personal data.
