MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi combined for over 175 rushing yards as the Wisconsin Badgers topped Army West Point 20-14 Saturday night at Camp Randall.
All of the scoring took place in the second and fourth quarters. Wisconsin opened the game with a 33-yard touchdown run from Allen before QB Graham Mertz would call his own number from five yards out. The PAT failed, sending the game to the break at 13-0.
Army West Point answered early in the 4th with a scoring drive capped off by a Tyhier Tyler touchdown run, but the Badgers would respond with yet another TD run from Mertz, this time from one yard out.
Mertz finished the game with 14 net rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also completed eight passes for 112 yards with no TDs or interceptions.
The Badgers outgained Army 310 to 266.
The win levels Wisconsin’s record at 3-3 (1-2 B1G). Army West Point falls to 4-2. The Badgers will travel to Purdue next week to take on the Boilermakers, who are fresh off a convincing upset win over Iowa this week. The game is set to kick at 2 PM, pregame coverage will begin at noon on WSAU.
Saturday’s meeting was the first-ever game between the programs. Army will take on Wake Forest from the ACC next week before ending its season with games against fellow independents and one FCS foe. They currently do not have an agreement to play another Big Ten school for the next several years.
