WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau man found guilty of killing his friend during a night of drinking will not be sentenced today as originally scheduled.
Court records show today’s sentencing hearing for David Anselmo was adjourned earlier this month in favor of a calendar call on Tuesday, April 19th.
He pled guilty to one count of homicide by intoxicated use of a firearm back in February as part of a plea deal. Charges stem from a 2019 incident at a graduation party where Anselmo and others had been drinking and passing around a handgun. As Anselmo was handling it, the gun accidentally went off and struck 19-year-old Trey Wilcox who later died.
According to Anselmo, he was checking to see if the gun was loaded while he was handling it. The Magazine was taken out of it at the time of the shooting.
A charge of operating a firearm while intoxicated was dismissed but read into the record and can be considered at sentencing.
