WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau’s Water Works Commission has voted to hire Madison-based Wood Environmental Infrastructure to work with the city and its current consulting firm on PFAS mitigation strategies at the new drinking water treatment plant.
Public Works Director Eric Lindman says they bring a range of expertise that’s needed at just the right time. “Not only just PFAS, but contaminants and water in general,” said Lindman. “They have a great background in working with regulatory agencies, both at the federal and state levels. I think that they will complement the engineering team that we have right now.”
The city is currently working with Donohue & Associates on a solution for the chemicals, but with so little known about them and even fewer regulations he says having another set of eyes on the problem will be beneficial.
“As this evolves and as standards get developed for it we are going to need some expertise in it,” said Lindman. “[The city itself will be] working through this for years. So I think having somebody on board and that relationship at the beginning [is beneficial.]”
Wood Environmental won the contract over five other candidates. All were Wisconsin-based companies, two were based in Stevens Point and the Wausau area.
Lindman describes the contract with the company as one focused on “task orders,” and that the utility will likely keep their contact info on file in case their services are needed down the road.
