ST. LOUIS, MO (WSAU) — Two home runs from Albert Pujols lifted the cardinals to a 6-3 win over the Brewers on Sunday.
The grizzled veteran accounted for four of the six runs on those hits- a solo shot in the second and a three-run tater in the 8th. The latter followed a solo home run from Dylan Carlson. Tyler O’Neil also homered for St. Louis.
Milwaukee’s offense also came on the long ball with the Brewers opening the scoring in the second with a two-run shot from Hunter Renfroe. Rowdy Tellez then tried to start a rally in the 9th with a solo homer, but after an Andrew McCutchen single Renfroe would ground out to end the game.
Taylor Rodgers (1-6) was tagged with the loss for Milwaukee. He allowed four runs on three hits. Miles Mikolas navigated eight innings to earn the win.
Starter Aaron Ashby didn’t factor in the decision after six innings of work.
Milwaukee falls to 61-52 on the season and stays in second place in the NL Central 1.5 games behind the Redbirds (63-51). As it stands, the Brewers are also 1.5 games back in the NL Wild Card chase. Those three spots are held by the Braves, Padres, and Phillies.
The road doesn’t get any easier for the Brewers this week with the Dodgers coming to town for four games beginning Monday night. Friday will kick off another three-game weekend set with the Cubs.
