MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A dose of a young Division I program may have been just what the Badger men’s hockey team needed this weekend.
Wisconsin secured the weekend sweep over Long Island University with a 4-3 overtime win on Saturday, but it didn’t come easy. Wisconsin erased a 2-0 Sharks lead after one to tie the game at 3 in the third, sending the game to the extra frame.
Zach Urdahl scored the game-winner in the three-on-three OT.
Sam Stange and Jack Horbach each scored in the second for the Badgers. LIU netted their third with about three minutes to go in the frame to restore their lead.
Charlie Stramel then scored two minutes into the third to send the game to OT.
Jared Moe made 16 saves in net to pick up the win.
LIU is in its third year with a Division I men’s program. The Sharks are playing an independent schedule while they search for a conference home.
The Badgers will wrap up their six-game homestand next weekend with another series against a young program in Lindenwood University (MO). The Lions are in their first year of transition from NCAA Division II to Division I and are also also playing an independent schedule. They opened the year with four games against Minnesota and Michigan, going 0-4 in those contests.
Lindenwood competed in the NAIA ranks until 2011. The majority of their sports compete in the Ohio Valley Conference.
