RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – Inflation is driving up the prices of just about everything these days and that will include your turkey this thanksgiving.
On top of the cost of production going up for a lot of products, the outbreak of avian flu is also impacting prices of turkey.
Andrew Stevens is an assistant professor of agricultural and applied economics at UW Madison.
He says turkey stocks are down about 8% this year. “While this will drive up prices a bit, but it likely isn’t enough to lead to any turkey shortages. “I think what the higher prices are going to do is they’re going to drive people towards smaller birds and some people to switch from turkey to other things. Maybe you’re going to try a Thanksgiving ham or maybe for the family of four roasting a chicken is going to be easier on the pocketbook and perhaps even more delicious.”
The overall cost for a Thanksgiving meal is expected to be up 4.3% from last year for people in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation estimates it will cost about $75 dollars to feed a group of 10.
