MERRILL, WI (WSAU) – After a public outcry earlier this year, Lincoln County will continue 4H youth funding for the upcoming year.
The Lincoln County Board of Supervisors had considered deep funding cuts for UW Extension, which administers the county’s 4H programs.
Many other Extension programs are being cut or eliminated. UW Extension will no longer offer youth machinery and tractor certificate. Their financial advisory services for non-profit groups will be dropped. The mental health services for youth adults, known as Positive Youth Development and Health and Well Being are being cut. Their canning program will be discontinued.
Other programs, like soil and water testing, will be cut back to online instead of in-person service.
UW Extension will continue to run the FoodWise program, which is funded in part through a federal grant. Those programs will be offered over the phone or online only.
Lincoln County had been facing a $1.2 million budget shortfall for 2023. The initial cut for UW Extension services was $200,000.
