The Wausau Board of Education is expected to hold another round of discussions on restructuring on Monday.
According to Monday’s agenda, they’ll hear a presentation intended to move the discussion from “analysis to action,” while also offering up a proposal to close five elementary schools.
Two of those buildings would be sold. Three would be kept with two repurposed to alternative or charter schools, the third would become a child care center.
Eight elementary schools would remain open.
The proposal also moves 5th graders into the middle school ranks at Horace Mann and John Muir. The High Schools are then split into two campuses with grades 8-9 in one building and 9-10 in the other.
The board will also hear a list of pros and cons for the proposal as part of Monday’s presentation, which you can see for yourself by clicking here.
Discussion on restructuring has been going on since the spring of 2022 when the district held several focus groups with a variety of stakeholders on the issue. The conversation picked up steam in the fall with a pair of community forums later in the year.
It should be noted that this is not a final proposal by any means. Officials also emphasize that the plan is being developed by the administration at the direction of the board, who will have the final say in any possible plan.
Monday’s meeting is at 5 PM in the Board Room located in the Longfellow Administration Building.
