STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The City of Stevens Point is the latest entity to join the “name the snowplow” bandwagon.
Mayor Mike Wiza and Superintendent of Streets Luke Kronstedt launched the contest on Monday, with local students encouraged to submit names for each of the city’s 14 snowplows. Wiza says he can’t wait to see what the students will come up with.
“Other cities have done this before, but I’m sure our area students will make it their own,” said Wiza in a press release. “I can’t wait to see the funny names they’ll come up with, maybe we’ll have a Han Snowlo or the Big Laplowski. We’ll even have a few named plows in the holiday parade on December 1st.”
Each participating school will submit two names to the city, as voted on by their students. The classrooms that submit the winning names will win an ice cream party from Festival Foods.
Names must be submitted by November 10th. There will be up to two classroom winners per school, and potential names should be no more than three words each.
“Name the Plow” contests have taken off in recent years, leading to creative, witty, or punny names. A recent contest in Madison yielded names like “Saltimus Prime,” a play on the Transformer’s Optimus Prime, and “Snowbi Wan Kenobi.” The Minnesota Department of Transportation is now deploying plows named “Bladertot Hot Dish,” “Sleetwood Mac,” and “Yer a Blizzard, Harry!”
Plows named “Ctrl-Salt-Delete,” “Blizzard Wizzard,” and “Ohio Thaw Enforcement” are in use in the Buckeye State.
