WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Boys and Girls Club of Wausau has announced plans to offer a learning hub for members this school year.
Communications Director Cassandra Ambrosius says parents will be able to sign their children up for sessions running from 7:30 AM to 2 PM every Monday through Friday, where they will be given the chance to get help from paraprofessional educators.
“We really want to support members that have barriers to virtual learning,” said Ambrosius. “That includes things like having access to reliable internet and trained educators. Really eliminate those things that might [keep them] from achieving their highest academic success.”
Those sessions will be exclusive for members only, and space will be limited. Ambrosius says members need to register online for the sessions to grab a spot beginning next week at the Boys and Girls Club website. Online registration doesn’t guarantee a spot but members can register online for as many sessions as they would like.
“If a parent works two days out of the week, they can come those two days. Or, they can come all five. It’s open up to whatever their schedule [allows].”
The club will also be taking extra safety measures to keep students safe from COVID-19 including extra sanitizing procedures, hand washing stations, and face coverings.
She adds that the club will also offer some after school programs like they normally would during the school year, with a few modifications. “From 3 PM to 7 PM on weekdays we will still be providing enrichment opportunities here at the club and through our virtual BGC as well.”
She says that only goes for the Caroline S Marks location in Wausau. Remote sites at the DC Everest Middle School and Greenheck Fieldhouse will not be open right away, but there are plans to bring programs back to those locations at a future date to be determined.
In addition to the morning sessions, the Club will also continue its meal service program which has been in place for the last five months. Ambrosius says the program is currently halted while the club makes upgrades to its kitchen, but that should resume by September 1st.
