Memo to Council Veto of roundabout 2024
STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza announced his veto of a City Council decision Tuesday afternoon, signaling another delay in the planned redesign of Business 51.
Specifically, Wiza is vetoing the city council’s decision on Monday, February 19th to turn down a recommendation from the Board of Public Works for an intersection at 4th and Division.
In a statement to WAOW TV, Wiza says he disagrees with the council and the inclination towards a roundabout at that location, saying he believes it would have a “negative impact on emergency vehicle access,” and negatively impact drivers and pedestrians alike.
Wiza continued, saying in part: “In our case, a veto does not prohibit the award of a public works contract. A veto would only apply to the council’s decision to turn down the recommendation of the Board of Public Works to use the signalized option as it related to the design of one particular intersection in a design contract that has already been awarded.”
Wiza made the announcement one day after the council made their decision. According to Wiza the City Clerk has been instructed to place the matter on the March 18th City Council agenda for an override vote. A 2/3rds majority will be required to cancel out the Mayor’s action.
