STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Rapids man charged with a deadly hit-and-run crash near Stevens Point has pled not guilty to the charges.
Kenneth Butler was in a Portage County courtroom on Friday where a judge also bound him over for trial.
Investigators say the 43-year-old hit 63-year-old Herbert Wievel, who was out for a walk. Court documents say Butler may have been looking at his phone’s GPS at the time of the incident, and admitted that he thought he had hit a turkey.
Butler has said that he stopped to inspect the damage to his vehicle at one point, though it’s not clear if or when that happened.
The crash occurred on West River Drive near the Highway HH intersection. He was hospitalized in critical condition and died the next day.
Butler is being held on a $250,000 cash bond. He returns to court on April 29th.
