Once again the list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees are out and let the arguing begin. Not only arguing about who should be in…but also what IS Rock & Roll….and whether we need a “Hall of Fame” anyway. Wouldnt a Museum of Rock History suffice. I'm not going to argue today whether Whitney Houston or Biggie or Rufus should be considered rock & roll. That train left the station long ago. Let's focus on the historical significance of the nominees.
Here's the list: Pat Benetar, Dave Matthews Band, Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Judas Priest, Kraftwerk, MC5, Motorhead, Nine Inch Nails, Todd Rundgren, Soundgarden, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy along with Houston, Notorious BIG and Rufus/Chaka Khan.
Now, for me, a child of the 60's and 70's, the Doobie Brothers and Todd Rundgren are easy choices. The Doobies were a chart topping band for years along with re-inventing themselves from a guitar based rock band to a keyboard based soul/pop outfit halfway thru their run. Rundgren should be in for his brilliant pop/rock LPs along with his work in the band Utopia and his production of many other groups and artists as well.
Now it gets tougher. There will be significant support for the historical contributions of bands like T Rex, MC5 and Kraftwerk. Also, I'm not a metalhead so youre going to have to explain to me why Judas Priest, Nine Inch Nails and even Motorhead are different that a hundred other bands of that ilk. Dave Matthews Band was huge for a short amount of time. Long enough to be a Hall-of-Famer? Maybe. Whitney and Biggie will probably get in although I know many of you don't classify that as Rock & Roll. Soundgarden gets in as one of those big grunge bands that defined an era. I think Pat Benetar should get in along with her husband/guitarist.band leader Neil Giraldo who was a big part of the sound of those records. Thin Lizzy is right on the borderline for me. Much bigger in England than here although “The Boys Are Back in Town” is a Hall of Fame song by any estimation. As for Rufus….I'm a yes…and not just because of Chaka Khan's amazing voice. But, for me, Tony Maiden's guitar was a huge part of the what made that band sound so good. Check out the guitar on this one…
Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has a new solo LP coming out that will feature alot of guests like Roger Taylor, Dave Grohl and Nancy Wilson. It's called “Get The Money” and a single was released yesterday called “Crossed The Line”

“Today, Russia took over a US military base that was rapidly abandoned. I wonder if Trump gave time to shred/destroy classified info and devices, or if everything is now in Russian control. PS: This is the first time in memory that the US has surrendered a base to Russia. MAGA!”-Kurt Eichenwald
“In the new Quinnipiac poll, Trump is now 14 points under water with white women. This is a big deal because Trump won this group in 2016 and there is no path for him to win in 2020 without it. White women have woken up since 2016 while 56% of white men still support a con man.”-Ryan Knight
“So many who voted for Trump did so cause they wanted to “shake things up”. Well, congrats. America is now shaken. This administration and the GOP enablers is madness. And we can’t end it soon enough.”-Jason Alexander
“trump has made a lot of exceedingly stupid decisions in the 78,000 dog years he’s been in office, but few compare, in impact and the speed with which they blew up in his face, than the one to withdraw troops from Northern Syria, paving the way for Turkey to invade the region and kill our Kurdish allies, leading to one (completely predictable) consequence after the next. Roughly 785 people affiliated with ISIS have escaped; an estimated 100,000 people have been displaced; at least 81 Kurdish fighters and 60 civilians have been killed; the American-allied Syrian Democratic Forces, abandoned by trump and under attack by Turkey, have teamed up with Bashar al-Assad’s Russian- and Iranian-backed government, giving Vladimir Putin major influence over the region; and approximately 50 nuclear weapons that the the U.S. has stored in the area have now effectively become Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s hostages, which isn’t a great turn of events considering the Turkish president has said as recently as last month that he would like to acquire such ammunition. To be clear, all of this was anticipated; Trump was warned by advisers for months that such disastrous outcomes would result if he followed his vaunted “instincts”—the ones he thinks tell him more than any dumb intelligence memos or briefing books can—and pulled out of Syria, telling the Kurds, who helped us defeat ISIS, that they were on their own because they sat out D-Day like a bunch of bone spur victims. And on Monday, perhaps the most predictable outcome occurred when trump announced that he would punish Turkey for the bloody mess he created.
Now that the situation has descended into unstoppable chaos, trump is naturally acting as though no one could have predicted any of this, and threatening retribution that experts say will do little to stop the unmitigated disaster he set into motion. … In addition to vowing sanctions and other measures intended to “swiftly destroy Turkey’s economy,” trump also spent the afternoon claiming that undocumented immigrants are a bigger threat to the United States than ISIS …”-Thomas Warley
