MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU-WDLB) — Wood County may be joining a growing list of local government entities seeking a constitutional amendment on the Citizens United Supreme Court decision regarding campaign spending by organizations and corporations.
The Wood County Board of Supervisors voted to place a non-binding referendum on the November ballot to determine if voters support an amendment to the Constitution to allow financial limits on political campaign contributions at their meeting Tuesday night.
Wisconsin Rapids Supervisor Mark Holbrook supported the resolution.
“We have to allow the public to decide how they feel about issues like this. I think the overwhelming feeling that I have about a resolution like this is that it’s time to hear from the people because it is their constitution and they have a right to make a statement about issues like this,” he said.
The national movement has already received support from 130 Wisconsin communities, including the city of Marshfield, where voters passed a spring referendum with over 80 percent support.
A resolution to place the matter on the ballot was brought forth by the Judicial & Legislative Committee, and it passed on a vote of 16-3, with Supervisors Bob Ashbeck, Lance Pliml, and Donna Rozar voting “no”.
