GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU-WRN) — One Packers legend had a few thoughts on how the team should handle their current QB situation heading into July’s training camp and preseason schedule.
Brett Favre appeared on TMZ Sports last weekend and was asked how he feels the team should handle having both Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love on their roster, which he says could add some new wrinkles to the offense.
“There are ways to incorporate, use him as a halfback, [install a halfback pass play,] or occasionally let him run it just to show that you’ll do that,” said Favre.
He said that’s similar to the current situation in New Orleans where Drew Brees is entering the final years of his playing career with Taysom Hill as his backup. Last year the Saints ran several packages with both players on the field, letting Hill use his athleticism to make plays from different positions.
Favre did say those gadget plays shouldn’t come at the expense of what got you here. Meaning don’t expect to see Love running an option or dive play on 3rd and Goal from the 4. “[At that time] just use Aaron like you always do. Let him use his legs, make a play, and win the game.”
Favre was in a similar situation to Rodgers in 2005 when Green Bay nabbed the former Cal QB with the 24th pick. Rodgers remained Favre’s backup until his first retirement in 2008.
He added that Love is in a unique situation that not all young QB’s get to experience as they come into the league. “You’re not getting hit, but you will get paid. Your stock isn’t going down at all unless you just tank in practice or are a totally different person than they drafted, but I don’t think that’s the case.”
Green Bay will open training camp in late July. Their first preseason game is August 15th against Arizona. The regular season kicks off September 13th versus Minnesota.
Of course, all of those dates are subject to change as details of the current COVID-19 pandemic change as well. The NFL has already canceled the preseason Hall of Fame Game in Canton between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, which was scheduled for August 6th. This year’s enshrinement ceremony was also canceled.
