It was January 8 1966 that the TV Shindig! aired its last episode. Shindig (the term meant a social gathering with dancing)had run since 1964 after LA disc jockey Jimmy O'Neill created the show and it replaced Hootenanny (a folk music show) on ABC's schedule. Shindig! featured a wide variety of music ranging from rock to soul to country and many of the British Invasion groups that had “invaded” America. The best part about Shindig! that made it different from American Bandstand and other music shows was that most of the performances were live, not lip-synced. They had a house band made up of some great players many of whom were from the session group known as The Wrecking Crew including James Burton, Larry Knechtel, Leon Russell and Glen B. Hardin. Billy Preston became a band regular and Glen Campbell & Delaney Bramlett did as well. There was a dance troupe that did the dances of the day while a live crowd of teenagers screamed their approval at their musical heroes. Everybody played Shindig! including The Beatles, The Aninals, The Kinks and The Who. The Beach Boys of course and soul stars like James Brown, Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin who made her TV debut on the show. Check out this list!

Sadly, ABC jerked it around the schedule and in its later months had it split in two and aired on Thursdays and Saturdays. Of course, many teenagers were not home on Saturdays and it was going against Jackie Gleason so the ratings tanked and it was cancelled. But all of the episodes were preserved so you can go down a You Tube rabbit hole and re-discover one of the most fertile times in pop music in all its' live, raw celluloid glory.

Quotes Of The Day'
” War is the failure of diplomacy. It’s the failure of statecraft. And it’s the failure of humanity. We’re seeing lots of failures combine tonight in horrifying ways. “-Ned Price
“Right now we need a diplomatic channel to deescalate this situation, which is why having a belligerent, ideological hack like @SecPompeo as our chief diplomat is so dangerous.”-Tommy Vietor
“The world was a lot safer when Donald Trump was at war with @BetteMidler”-Stuart Stevens
“A war with Iran is madness, and it is strategically and morally a disaster in the making. And don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.”-Chris Hayes
“A president who lost the popular vote by 2.9 million votes, suffered the worst midterm election defeat in US history & then got impeached now wants to start a war that a majority of Americans disapprove of”-Ari Berman
“Hillary Clinton warned y'all about Trump.
Nikki Haley is warning y'all about Nikki Haley.
Everytime she speaks she proves she doesn't deserve to be in any position of power.”-Covie
“It amazes me that, three years in, anyone could ask, about any subject, “What is Trump’s strategy?” There is NEVER a strategy. He’s intellectually and psychologically incapable of strategy. He’s purely impulsive, as sociopaths an psychopaths typically are. He virtually admits … “-George Conway

“I wish Congressional Republicans would take a step back and see what they've become under Trump. Now they spend most of their time protecting Trump's corruption, defending his dangerous military adventures, and repeating his Kremlin conspiracy theories. What a way to live!”-Evan McMullin
“Fun to imagine if Harry Reid and Barack Obama had teamed up to conceal evidence of impeachable offenses from Congress and the public. Somehow I don't think the coverage of it would've been overly fixated on whether Reid could “hold his caucus together” or whatever.”-Brian Beutler
“It’s horrific, but Americans need to understand that a madman with no political skills or talents to speak of, a man incapable of plans and ignorant of history, is serving as President of the United States. Lunging toward war, it’s a terrifying but necessary concept to grasp.”-Jared Yates Sexton
