The USGA is out this week with revisions to it's rules and the overhaul might be the biggest upgrade since the rule book was established in 1744. They have determined that making some of the arcane rules esier to understand for the average golfer will help the game grow. Some of the proposed changes include no penalty for accidentally moving your ball while in search of it or on the putting green…when dropping a ball while taking relief you can do so from just above the ground rather than standing up with arm outstretched…time for search of a lost ball is reduced from 5 to 3 minutes…no penalty for hitting an unattended flagstick on a putt from the green…players can take relief from a bunker by taking a 2 stroke penalty (I could have used that rule on my trip to Scotland)…A club damaged during a round can continue to be used even if the player damaged it in anger…players are encouraged to play “ready golf” and take shots out of turn when it makes sense to do so…and also to use no more than 40 seconds to hit the ball…players could also have the number of strokes on a given hole capped under a “maximum score” format (we call that “taking an x” in my group).
Some of these make sense although I would imagine that many of the old, staid members of the USGA will balk at changing the rules to appeal to those “dang kids”.
I'll have East boys basketball tournament action for you tonight as the Lumberjacks begin tournament play with a home matchup against Mosinee. 7pm start on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9 and streamed at foxsportswausau.com (if it works). The second game of our DH is DC Everest at Eau Claire North.
Congrats to the Wausau West Warrior hockey teams as they hammered West Salem 7-0. They play Hudson tonight in what arguably could be called the “title” game. These are the two best teams left even if they are meeting in the semi-finals. The CW Storm girls hockey team plays this afternoon vs Sun Prairie.
Are you watching “Legion”? I wasnt familiar with the comic books about this Marvel character but so far the tv show is delightfully weird. A bunch of good suff is returning in the next couple of weeks including “The Americans” .
If you would like to relive the 80's this summer…Hall & Oates are going out on tour with Tears For Fears. Its a 29 city trek with tickets on sale today at HallandOates.com.
I know you want to know the answer to one of the most burning questions every summer…how much urine is in the average swimming pool. A chemist at the University of Alberta says its possible to get a rough estimate based on how much artificial sweeteners are in the water because they don't completely break down in the water. Researchers believe that a commercial size swimming pool has about 20 gallons of urine in it…a residential pool 2 gallons. Really??? Have you ever peed in a pool???
Today's edition of “elections have consequences”….Rep. Devin Nunes, chairman of the US House Permanent Select Comm on Intelligence warned reporters that they could find themselves under investigation if they continue to ask questions about Att. General Jeff Sessions involement with the Russians. He also dismissed calls for his committee to investigate Sessions. Um, really??…Threatening reporters for doing their job? Does that top our very own Senator Ron Johnson though? Knowing he won't have to face voters for another six years…he actually sent out a cease and desist order to one of his constituents over her requests to come to the state and hold a town hall. He threatened in the letter to send her name to police if she continued. Um…really?? Johnson, Sean Duffy and other congressional Republicans are cowards for not facing the people who pay their salaries and lavish benefits. If facing your voters is too tough for you…resign now…you don't deserve to hold the office.
