WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — Organizers of the Never Forgotten Honor Flight 5K race say this year’s race outpaced last year.
Never Forgotten Honor Flight co-founder Mike Thompson says the race turned out past their expectations. “Pretty close to 1498 participants that ran walked, pushed strollers. Pretty decent weather, 42 degrees at race time. Really a good turnout and enthusiastic crowd supporting the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.” The race last year drew just over 1200 runners.
Last year’s new addition of the Bock Buster 5K race up and down the hill on Mcintosh street also drew a larger crowd. “I hope not too many, ” Thompson laughs. “Seriously, I think it was a couple hundred anyway, it’s a tough run up that hill.”
Organizers are still counting the totals from Saturday which included not only the race registration but proceeds from the Bull Falls Brewery Bockfest. Thompson says they’re still counting, but this year’s turnout likely raised a lot of money. “I would estimate it would be close to five figures, $10,000, in that neighborhood.” Every 500 dollars raised is enough to send a veteran on their Honor Flight to Washington.
