SCOTSSDALE, AZ (LEARFIELD-WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers’ offense cooled down yesterday in a 5-to-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies in Scottsdale Arizona. After scoring 25 runs in their previous two games, Scooter Gennett drove home Jean Segura in the sixth inning for the Crew’s only tally.
Jon Gray, the Rockies’ top prospect from Double-“A”, threw four scoreless innings and gave up just two singles. Gray struck out a pair with the help of a 97-mile-an-hour fastball.
Brewers’ outfielder Gerardo Parra played his first-ever game at first base, as skipper Ron Roenicke looks for back-ups to Adam Lind. Parra had a quiet outing, with no balls hit to him — and he only took three throws from his defense. Parra called it a “different” experience, but Roenicke said he at least looked comfortable in that spot.
Milwaukee starter Tyler Thornburg gave up a solo homer and one other hit in four innings. Carlos Gomez left early, after he jammed a shoulder while sliding into second base — but Roenicke said it was not serious.
Milwaukee is now 8-and-10 in the Cactus League. This evening, the Brewers will play the Arizona Diamondbacks in their first night game of the spring.
Right-hander Michael Blazek will make his first spring start for the Crew, after a half-dozen relief appearances.
