WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — Hawthorne Hills students have installed a group of Little Free Libraries near the school.
Hawthorne Hills Parent Partnership Coordinator Cindy Heiting says the construction of the Libraries was lead by Library Media Specialist Brad Schmicker as part of a grant program. “He made eight Little Libraries with a group of students who met after school once a week for six weeks, and they helped build the Libraries.”
The Libraries are sheltered boxes built to hold books, and the idea is to offer a place to do a book exchange with the public. “Take a book, read a book, return a book. We don’t even care if all our books disappear. That’s the idea, we want people to get reading.” Heiting says the Libraries also come with a sense of do-it-yourself thanks to a community of people on the internet who maintain the project. “You can go on the internet and find plans to build the Libraries, you can come up with your own plans, it’s just kind of a neat way for families to get together and build some Libraries or different groups to do that also.”
There are a number of the Libraries across Central Wisconsin. To find one near you visit http://littlefreelibrary.org.
