JACKSON COUNTY, Wis (MetroSource) The efforts to reintroduce the elk population to Wisconsin is continuing with the release of a herd from Kentucky.
The Department of Natural Resources says 50 elk were recently released in Jackson County as part of a five-year program being conducted by the DNR.
Officials call the success of the first year of the program “exceptional” especially with the arrival of several new calves this summer.
Of the 23 elk released in eastern Jackson County last year, 13 remain alive and at least one wild birth has been confirmed.
