STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) – A suspected drunk driver is facing jail time after being charged with a fifth OWI.
48-year-old Bernard G. Thompson of Stevens Point was arrested Saturday by the Wisconsin State Patrol on County Road AA. His blood alcohol level – 0.15 – was nearly twice the legal limit. He was also charged with speeding and having open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.
Bond was set at $2,500 cash during a court appearance on Monday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 20th.
Thompson could face a maximum of six years in jail. Wisconsin toughened the OWI laws earlier this year where a fourth OWI is now considered a felony with mandatory jail time. The change also increased the maximum sentence for fifth and sixth OWI offenses.
