PLOVER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – It’s “mission accomplished” for a group of Ben Franklin Junior High School students, who raised $10,000 to restore Plover’s 9/11 Memorial in one day during the annual Celebrate Plover event.
The students have been working with two mentors for five months to make the fundraiser happen,
None of the students were alive to remember the events of that day, but they still recognize the significance.
“It’s a really good feeling,” said student Sarah Adams. “Shows we can actually do something and change.”
“In my perspective it’s about honoring people the right way, I felt very compelled to do that,” said student Remington Wisinski.
The memorial has an actual piece of the World Trade Center and three benches along with plaques and bricks. Each brick represents a firefighter or police officer that lost their life that day.
The concrete of the memorial has started to crumble, but the money will be used to replace it with longer-lasting granite with a target finish date of September 11th this year.
