WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A Wausau teenager convicted for the murder of another teen has withdrawn his request for a new trial.
Dylan Yang is serving a 13-year prison sentence for the murder of Isaiah Powell in 2015. Newsline 9 reports that Yang himself asked his attorney, Harry Hertel, to withdraw the motion that argued the original defense was ineffective, saying that Yang did not want to put his family or Isaiah’s family through another trial and that he deserved to be punished for the crime.
After the hearing Tuesday, Hertel went on to say that Yang’s family disagreed with the decision, but understood that Dylan was looking out for them.
Yang was sentenced to 13 years in prison and 17 years of extended supervision for stabbing Powell to death. At the sentencing hearing, Hertel attempted to mount a new defense for his client and get a lesser sentence with no prison time, but the prosecution argued that would encourage more youth murders with the expectation of leniency.
