UNDATED (WSAU) — The tobacco sales training website known as smokecheck.org has been updated and changed to WITobaccoCheck.org.
Judy Sargent, a Public Health Nurse with the Lincoln County Health Department, says the change was done to try and hold retailers more accountable.
“We were able to offer classes in the past and invite people in,” she said. “And, the numbers were low. And, we had no process in place to go back to looking at the retailers that are selling tobacco to know that they have training.”
Sargent says that the changes will only help when it comes to training.
“I think that everyone will be taught the same thing and that it will be simplified language and that people will be accountable. Instead of one person training another person and you not really knowing what they were told,” said Sargent.
The new features include having stores making an account and monitoring their employees’ progress when it comes to training. The name was also changed to include the other types of tobacco use that goes on in the state, like smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes.
Sargent says the 62 tobacco retailers in Lincoln County have been notified of the changes and will have their compliance with the changes checked on sometime in the summer.
